Face as a hat
December 22nd, 2008 angelaSo I proved her wrong and I did wear her face as a hat…
Here is a tiny copy of something I drew of Sweeney Todd. It has been photoshoped for the red and the black gradient. Not sure why it is so small.

Last Sunday, Abe and I went up to Bellingham to the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra’s holiday concert. It was really nice. My mom got us the tickets so we went with her and Jim and Isaac. I really liked the first half of the first half and the whole second half. We even got to sing White Christmas with the choir. It was great. Mostly volunteer musicians and they did a great job. It was lovely.
However, they chose the most unfortunate sack dresses for the women. They weren’t as black as they should have been and the cloth choice was most unfortunate. It showed every lump and bubble on a woman’s body. They had a great soloist soprano and you could see the dent where her belly button was. Very distracting. My mom noticed too.
Anyways, afterwards we went to the Temple Bar just a few blocks away and I had the best tuna/provolone panini. Amazing. The salad I hated, but Isaac ate mine. Abe and Jim loved theirs too. I was blown away by that panini sandwich though. I highly recommend it.
Before we went to mom’s to go to the concert, we met with Rijl and Teirnan for lunch, which was great. It is so nice to see her. I had the veggie melt (bagel thing) and it was delicious as always. She had the smoked salmon chowder which was the special and smelled amazing. Then Abe and I each got a chocolate chip cookie and they were almost a foot across! And quite good. We chatted with Rijl for an hour or so. Always so nice to see her. Makes me want to move to Bellingham just so we can hang out more often.
I was looking at houses there. They are a little less expensive than here. There are some really nice ones. I also looked at houses in Northern Maine. There are some super cheap really cool ones. I really want an old house. If I am going to spend that much money, I want to at least get something I really love.
Off to knit Xmas gifts….
This weekend, after I got back from my grandpa’s 90th surprise birthday (in another post), Abe and I played a demo for LEGO Batman. It was so good, we went out and bought it. And LEGO Star Wars. Wow oh wow. What can I say. This has got to be one of my favorite games ever. I could play it all the time. I actually convinced Abe to play it with me tonight instead of EQ2. I am so excited because I think LittleBigPlanet is going to have very similar game play. This is exactly the game play that I like the best. I like to play Batman the best. And in Star Wars I like to play Qui Gon Jin.
So this Friday is Halloween and I need to come up with a costume. I think I am going to be Tohya Miho from Megatokyo. I have half the clothes and I totally have the shoes now that those boots have been fixed, though maybe I should wear my knee high lace up platforms instead. I think the ones I just got fixed would work better.
This weekend I also made a hat. It is from the LYS tour the Hilltop yarn store in Queen Anne. Great hat. I just need to make it longer next time or use the right size needles (10.5 instead of 9). I used Malabrigo Chunky in burgundy and it is so amazingly soft. I love it. It just needs to be bigger. I have so much hair it slides up my head. I think I am going to ask my boss if I can dye my hair purple and get my hair cut and dyed this weekend. Just normal color if I can’t go purple. I also am almost done with some socks. I just need to weave in the ends (and get pictures).
Also! I got this great bag from Deadworry - Octo-owl messenger bag. This is what I am going to use to travel to Calgary. So exciting. SO EXCITING!!
Turned out great. I did make the panel. I got some black buttons that look a bit like bugs and or pine cones some gray ribbon. The ribbon is not as soft as I think I need but it works until I can afford to spend $10 on 2 yards of soft ribbon. Here is is from the back in the cardigan style
Here is is from the front in the cardigan style. I like it. It is comfy, but you can’t lift your arms because the “sleeves” pull up over your shoulders. I think it looks really classy. When I lose weight, it will look even better. Comfy and warm, it is great for work. I can’t wait to make another. I want to make it in baby alpaca grande about 8 ” longer and maybe 2″ wider.
Here is the hood, which I wore while I worked from home yesterday because it was so friggin’ cold. The hood is nice and big and fits over my gimongous head.
Here is the shrug. Not my favorite. I can’t get it to button over my “assets” and I couldn’t decide whether to put the lacing at the top or bottom.
Here is the sleeve. In this picture, it looks great, but the arms don’t close properly. Where it isn’t pulled tight over my arms, the buttons keep coming undone. I might try double buttoning it.
I can’t wait to make the next one. I would do the lace border only 2 or 3 yarn overs wide, though. The k3tog hurts my wrist.
In other knittin’ news, I have started knitting some toe-up Monkey socks. The pattern is upside down since it was written for cuff-down socks, but I think I like it better. They look awesome. I would give you pictures, but the batteries on the camera just ran out after I uploaded all these pictures. They are for Socktober. I am also almost done with the Tea Yarn socks. They are nice and simple.
What a weekend. We rearranged the living room so now it is all back the way it was when we first moved in but we have more stuff now. Stupid knitting. It is nice, but there is no light at the couch where I knit so the cables on Versatility are a bit difficult. We either need to move the lamp or get some lamp that will hang from the ceiling or wall. I have a great one but I am not sure how high a watt it can take and it is really old. I have another one that is one of those cheap Asian lamps, but for some reason it doesn’t work. I wonder if it just needs a new bulb. We’ll have to try that.
This week I have watched the live action Tick show and I loved it. I am bummed that I am out of Tick shows to watch. Totally awesome. Totally my sense of humor. Dumb and just a little pervy and totally juvenile. Pretty much the most quotable show I have ever seen. I watched Beowulf tonight. I liked it. It was weird because it looked like people but no one moved like people. I swear I watched another movie, but I don’t remember what. We watched the first episode of Twin Peaks. I don’t think I can watch it though. It is a little too creepy. I had a hard time falling asleep even after half an hour of the Simpsons.
So this weekend, I started to paint the Dude you may have seen on here before. Here is a picture I drew at work. You can’t really see it, but he is standing at the base of a mangrove tree and covered in mud.
The painting is based on that. This is just the very start. It is not going so well. I think I am going to take it off and paint something else. Blegh. I am no good at painting. I need to start with something simpler. Or something that is not based at least 50% in my head.
I have also started the York and Lancaster pattern from the Tsarina of Tsocks - Flock Tsock Club. One is white and I have started the red one. That is a little white flower on the toe. Very cute. I am no good at intarsia and fair isle. I need to practice. I really want to make this awesome sweater. I will make the birds in black, with the same oatmeal background and switch the green branches so every other one is brown. I think it will be awesome.
Also this weekend, I bought some acid dye and dyed some yarn. The back row in this pic is the acid dye. The front row on the left is Tropical Punch Kool Aid and the other three in the front are vinegar and food coloring (yes the droppers you get at the grocery store).
The back from left to right is pumpkin orange, gunmetal gray, emerald green, lilac, kelly green (which I though was more like emerald green), gold yellow, and fire red. The front from the left is the tropical punch, then striped red and green using a hot pour method where I put the yarn in a pot of hot water and poured the color over parts, then yellow green which I think turned out totally awesome, and then what I was hoping would be green, yellow and red but I did a bad job and it turned into an awesome fall colored.
It was actually mostly green with a bit of yellow and red. Then I dripped some blue over it. Totally awesome. I really can’t wait to spin this up. Right now I am spinning up the orange though. The fall is next. I hope it looks good when it is done.
Here is the tower of yarn. 1 ounce or so of each color.
Finally, here is the cat just being weird. It doesn’t look as weird in the photo as in real life.
Check what I got in the mail!
I found this awesome roving on Craigslist and bought–get this–7 lbs! Here are 6 of the balls lined up on the back of the couch.
Here is a single ball. Look how giant it is!
And here it is ripped into 14 pieces about 1 ounce each.
Here they are lined up on the back of the couch.
That is a heck of a lot of yarn. I have good plans. Abe will get a hat. And I have some good ideas for quick Xmas presents. Very exciting.
A couple weekends ago we made a delicious dutch pancake. I couldn’t find the camera in time to get a good picture of how much it rose, but here it is after it fell a bit.
Anyways, I am still working on Versatility and it is still awesome. I had a great idea for a tree-inspired ribbed sweater. It is a little hard to describe, but I wrote it down in my little notebook so it should be a pattern at some point. I am almost done with the first glove. Then I will write down the pattern and then knit the second Rowan Felted Tweed mitten. Then I have two more to make, but I don’t know who reads this so I can’t tell you who they are for. I think they will be awesome though.
So I was looking at other sites, namely this SteamPunk thing on live journal. These shoes are awesome. They are similar to the Babycakes by Fluevog. I can’t decide which one I like more! I really liked the mauve, pine and grey Babycakes, but I can’t find them anywhere. These boots are also awesome, but I like the other ones better. I also found Stitchopoly, the needlework version of Monopoly.
